How Your Creativity Reflects the Image of God

My dad told me once that there is no such thing as a creative person. He said that if you looked at every single individual on the whole planet from the day God made Adam and Eve to the present and even the future, you would not find one person that was creative. Not one.

As incredible (and perhaps insulting) as that might sound, he actually had a really good point. “Creativity” technically means making something from nothing, and only God has done that. When we say someone is “creative,” we mean that they have put together the pieces God made in an innovative way to make planes, trains, and an Eiffel Tower. The Bible, though, says that God spoke and the world existed in all of its complexity. THAT is creativity! In Genesis 1, we see “God said…” and then light, space, trees, water, planets, and animals came to be.

But I am here to tell you, oh non-creative-but-amazingly-innovative reader, that part of you that can dream up and put together amazing things is a reflection of your Creator! Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Every time you have a new idea, invent a recipe, design a website, build a table, or write a story, you are reflecting God’s ultimate creativity. We are showing the world a little bit of what He is like.

Do you think of it that way? Do you take your thoughts and projects as chances to worship God and to share His creativity with others?

Because His creativity really is astounding. I already mentioned that God spoke all of these things into existence with nothing more than a word, but it becomes even more amazing when you try to imagine what the world was like before that:

“The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep.” -Genesis 1:1-2

In Genesis 1, we read that God created light (verse 3), water (verse 6), grass, and plants (verse 11). Those were all cutting edge, never before seen ideas! God just made them up, with all of the gravitational, biological, structural, and chemical laws that govern them!

The psalmist describes the amazing creation of our God this way in Psalm 8:3-8,

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,

What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him?

For You have made him a little lower than the angels,
And You have crowned him with glory and honor.

You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands;
You have put all things under his feet,

All sheep and oxen—
Even the beasts of the field,

The birds of the air,
And the fish of the sea
That pass through the paths of the seas.

And that creativity just touches the surface of all God continues to do! God created the Earth way back when, but He also creates and leaves His fingerprints on each and every precious newborn baby.

Psalm 139 says,

For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.

I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.

My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

There is no doubt at all that our God is a God of creativity, and when we invent or create with the skills that we have been gifted with, we are reminding the world that we were made in our Creator’s image.

So whatever your creative outlet is, whether that is writing, design, building, painting, music, or something else entirely, take a minute to think about how that piece of you reflects your Creator. Think about how He put that love and passion into you in the first place. And think about how much more awesome the creativity of God Himself is. And when someone asks you how you do what you do, let them know!

“You alone are the Lord;
You have made heaven,
The heaven of heavens, with all their host,
The earth and everything on it,
The seas and all that is in them,
And You preserve them all.
The host of heaven worships You.” -Nehemiah 9:6

Share your story! What is your creative outlet? How does it remind you to worship your God?

  1. Another great post! I’m a photographer and whatever I capture through my lens is always giving Glory to God because I sharing what He created through my eyes! Every time I see a lovely shot, I meditate on it for a moment because God put it my path for a reason. Thanks for this reminder! 🙂
